Pop Tunes for Mystics
This album started in 2005 after listening to Nick Drake’s “Five Leaves Left”. It’s an album for long drives in the country, watching the sun come up, or late night meditations on the stars. My first musical loves were western and eastern classical music. I owe so much to my friend and collaborator, Brian Whistler whose translucent, poetic arrangements and performances with many diverse instruments made this album possible.
Great thanks to Roy Rogers who “channeled” the slide guitar work of George Harrison so perfectly on “The Lennon Song”. Thank you Don de Brauwere who attended many of the final mixes. Thank you to all my friends and relatives who supported me during the project. Heartfelt gratitude to Paul Tumolo of Wildplum Records who believed in this work; and special thanks to Michelle Blackwell for her beautiful CD package design.
We recorded these tracks on many a rainy Tuesday afternoon at Whistler Studios in Forestville, CA overlooking a Russian River redwood canyon. The tallest of living things listened to these songs outside our rainstreaked windows.

Set on the North Dakota plains, this song uses a tornado as a metaphor for the destructive force of family violence that so many grow up with.

The curious place where the pain of loss, and the loss of control, can lead to liberation and renewal.

Drop of Time
A metaphorical exploration of the process of dying — a river emptying into the sea.

Love stays on
Love stays here
Everything else disappears
If life's a fire
Love is rain
Life's getting colder, but
Love brings a flame.
Someone told me love is trying to wake your sleeping heart
Someone told me love is waiting at the center of a star
It's all you need, but you need it all . . .
Love has space
Love has room
There is a place for
Love in you
Love is large
Love has lungs
Life isn't over
Til love is sung
Someone told me love is trying to ignite itself in you
Someone told me love is trying to excite your destiny
And love will merge cross the universe . . .
Love is close
Love is near
If you don't feel it
You're living in fear
Cause fear gets all
That love can't find
So see with your heart
And open your mind
Someone told me love is going to release all prisoners
Someone told me love is all you really needed from this earth
The love you make is equal to the . . .
Love stays on
Love stays here
Everything else disappears

There's a fire burning inside of me
That's how it begins
There's a river running next to the fire
That I like to go swimming in
And it scares me when I'm out in the water
But I always get to the island
Then I sit in the sun and I think about life
I feel the love I feel so alive
And the water
That surrounds me
Yes the water
Is a deep blue
It's a very deep blue
Sea
There's something growing out of me
That's how I'm leaving the ground
There's a mountain living under the tree
Think I'll hike around it
But it scares me when I'm up at the top
So I only stay for awhile
And I look at the sky and I think about space
And I wonder what the hell I should do in this place
And the heavens
All around me
Yes the heavens
Are a deep blue
It's a very deep blue Sea
There's a beach stretching out in me
Where I can dig my toes in the sand
There's an ocean living under the beach
That I'm trying to understand
And it scares me when I don't have an answer
But I keep on living anyway
Then I look at my life on the horizon
And I wonder what the hell I should do until then
And a lifetime
That surrounds me
Yes a lifetime
Is a deep blue
And the water
All around me
Yes the water
Is a deep blue
Yes it's a deep blue
It's a very deep blue sea
Time Runs Away

Time runs away, like a kid with a stolen pie
And try as you may, you'll never catch this guy
You can smell where he's been, you can taste his scent on the breeze
But if he were your friend, he'd stop and give you a piece
And all I can say
Time runs away
Running like a leaf that's falling
Running like a life that's calling
Time runs away, he jumped over your fence last night
When you woke up today, he was nowhere in sight
He's stolen your car, drove some place where you'll never find him
So you stare at the stars, you knew you could never bind him
And all I can say
Time runs away
Running like the rain that's falling
Running like a life that's calling
Time runs away, he's losing his mind again
He's grown old and gray, and he can't recognize his friends
So you stare in his eyes, looking for someone that you knew
Until you realize that he's not looking back at you
All I can say
Time runs away
Running like the snow that's falling
Running like a life that's calling
Can you hear it call?
Child of the War

Frost hung in the air
And everywhere there were fine parades
She stood on a chair
And watched the flags wave
A girl of thirteen
What a time to be in Germany
In the war she was weaned
Such a strange puberty
She was a child of the war
Forced to grow up much too fast
A child of the war
Struggling with her past
The basement walls were cold
And a candle was their only heat
All the bread smelled of mold
During the Nazi retreat
And when the lights went out
And explosions rocked the cellar door
In the morning she’d look out
At the scars of the war
She was a child of the war
Listening to the planes at night
A child of the war
Turning out the light
Living down inside the ground, the ground
Hiding from the sky, the sky
Deadly, deadly was the moon at night
That lit, that lit her lullabies
Spring winds blew chill
For flowers those days
The bombs fell in April
Leaving ashes in May
And when the smoke had cleared
And the swastikas were hid from view
She served the Yankees beer
And they talked of the Jews
And when the truth was told
She laughed at such a silly tale
Still wearing the blindfold
She felt her cheeks pale
She was a child of the war
Trying hard to not believe
A child of the war
With her memories

Aly Marie…
Doesn’t like the ocean—
It’s far to bright and wide
And there’s no place she can hide
But
Aly Marie…
Loves to light a fire—
On the beach at night
With the fire in her eyes
The eyes of a dreamer
Bridge: She’s a dreamer…
Aly Marie…
Doesn’t like a rainbow—
To interrupt a storm
She doesn’t need it warm
Because
Aly Marie…
Loves a cloudy sky—
The thunder and the light
And the sound of rain at night
She has the sight
Of a dreamer
Bridge: With the rain falling down
Aly Marie…
Has a fear of flying…
But that won’t stop her trying
To see the world
She’s a curious girl
But most of all
She’s a dreamer…
Oh yes she is…
So much of life ahead
The Tornado
by Jim Ocean

It was evening in the heartland and the shadows were growing long
The cicadas nearly deafened you with their song
There was lightning in the distance and a warning on the air
As I waited for a tornado to come down through the air . . . like a demon
Throwing houses everywhere, but I never saw one
The wind was blowing hard through the living room that night
We listened through the wall to hear them fight
So I hid out in the backyard catching fireflies
Listening to the thunder in my home that night
And I worried that a wind would eat this house . . . this house of fury
Gotta get away . . .
The storm is breaking now . . .
Gotta get away . . .
The storm is breaking now
Sometimes we’d run for the car
Driving fast from a sky that hung so dark
I pressed my nose to the window and imagined a funnel cloud
To take me away . . . far away from this family shroud
The storm was passing over, all the rain was heading south
But dark clouds were still gathering in the house
And as the moon shown through my window, I heard shouting in the hall
Then I dreamed that a tornado had just swallowed it all . . . like a demon
Making everything seem small, but I never saw one.
Dark Matter
by Jim Ocean

Astronomers lay awake in their beds at night
The thought in their heads there’s more dark matter than light
They stare through their ceilings as they drift off to sleep
Dreaming of dark invisible things in the deep
Stretching out in the night
With the universe, there in sight
Grab a star, hold on tight
Physicist try, they try hard to be cool
About all those things that they learned back in school
Like no matter what you might think of this place
Love it or hate it, it’s just all empty space
Sinking down in your skin
There’s a universe there within
And where you end, you begin
Biologists act so detached, so blasé
Dissecting a heart is just so passé
But where did the love go that lived deep in the vein?
Did it leave in the air? Will it return through the rain?
Flowing out through your blood
Sinking down in the mud
Life is meant to be loved
Falling

There are times in life when the road is clear
When you've found your passion and love is near
Like a river knows how to find the sea
You flow with purpose so easily
But there are times in life when you've lost your way
Kind of feels just like today
I don't know where I'm going
There are times in life when a dream is young
Do you recall the feeling when it's just begun
Though you struggle blindly you don't give in
Something's driving you right up to the rim
But there are times in life when you've lost your way
When it's just enough to endure
I don't know where I'm going
Somebody help me
Somebody please
Somebody help me
I'm Falling . . .
There are times in life when you get a chance
To do something different, maybe learn to dance
Better do it now while your feet are good
Years from now, you wish you could
Cause there's times in life when you're paralyzed
When it's just enough to survive
I don't know where I'm going
Somebody help me
Somebody please
Somebody help me
I'm Falling . . .

You are my window, looking at you
Not many men know, this beautiful view
You are my window into this world
I see your wrinkles, I see the little girl
I am in love with all I see
You are the mountains, and you are the wild blue sea
I am in love, 'cause when I look at you
I see an open sky, changing in hue
Changing in you . . .
You are my window, I see through your pane
I see my tomorrow inside the frame
You are my window, I see through your eyes
I see through your shadow, I see your paradise
I am in love with all I see
You bring me in the world, you live inside of me
I am in love, 'cause when I look at you
I see an open sky, changing in hue
Changing in view . . .
You are my window on rainy days
Sometimes there's a rainbow
Sometimes it just rains all day . . .
A Drop of Time

Some people are so hard
Nothing gets through their skin
Nothing goes in too far
But I've never been that tough
The mysteries of this world are quite enough
Anyone can see that I'm
In a drop of time
Like the sun that lies so low
In the wintertime
Things are moving slowly here
You can't go outside
Sitting by the window
Waiting for a sign
By the way, did I say
That in this solid world, I'm just melting away
I have come to a place in my life
Where the stream opens up to a river
And as I flow along to the ocean
I see you wave goodbye from the shore
You choose a path that leads to the mountains
Where your dreams all wait to be born
And I can't go
This river of longing just pushes me on
And I feel so lonely
I might drown here all alone
But I know
The sea will take me
Into its arms
The sea will take me
Into its arms
Naked on my own
Naked on my own
Naked on my own
I can feel myself moving forward
But my eyes look back where I've been
And I don't swim
I'm only just drifting
Up to my chin
And you say you almost went under
That my currents flow much too strong
And you don't belong
In the river beside me
Or even this song
And I feel so lonely
I might drown here all alone
But I know
The sea will take me
Into its arms
The sea will take me
Into its arms
Naked on my own
Naked on my own
Naked on my own
Fear and Love
by Jim Ocean

Fear has a crush on love
She's been inside his blood
Ever since he saw her
But Love just teases Fear along
Singing out a song
She knows will drive him crazy
Yea, Fear; he's got it bad for Love
But Love just teases him along.
Love is staring at the sky
She gets so hypnotized
She's so beguiled by weather
But Fear, he thinks that it's not fair
To see her flirting with the wind
It's more than he can bear
But Love keeps staring at the sky
And Fear, he's such a jealous guy
Love is drawn to passion
And when he swoops down from his dark cloud
She rides him into danger
Fear stares at the clouds
He knows the Wind's such a fickle lover
And with this thought, he says out loud
I&apos ve got to save her!
At that moment he was brave
At that moment he knew he had to save her
He flew right into the heart of the darkest cloud
At that moment he was furious
Risking everything he was feeling curious
He flew right into the heart of the darkest cloud
Then he thought he heard a sound
Yes, he thought he heard her calling
When the wind threw her down
That's when he caught her falling . . .
Then Love looked into his eyes
Seeing his surprise that she wasn&apos t leaving
He said, Hey, why don&apos t you turn away?”
She said, “You&apos re not Fear today . . .
And I always give my heart to Courage . . . ”
Yea, Fear; he's got it bad for Love
And Love, she just teases Fear along
